When it comes to garden boundaries on the English Riviera, standard off-the-shelf solutions often don't cut it. A secure, stylish boundary is essential not just for privacy, but for peace of mind when the UK weather takes a turn. Whether your property is exposed to the brisk coastal breezes coming off Babbacombe Downs or nestled closer to the historic grounds of Torre Abbey, a fence needs to be built with local conditions in mind.
Recently, we were called out to a property in Torquay to rectify a fencing disaster caused by high wind loads. Here is how we tackled the project and built a boundary designed to last.
The Project: Assessing the Damage
The client's original boundary consisted of standard 6ft fence panels. Unfortunately, whoever installed them had simply bolted the framework to a very low, poorly constructed wall. In the fencing trade, this is a recipe for disaster. The wall couldn't provide the necessary structural integrity, and the large surface area of the 6ft panels acted like a sail. Unsurprisingly, the wind load proved too much, and the entire run had collapsed.
The client needed a permanent, reliable replacement. We agreed that a bespoke 6ft feather-board fence (often referred to as Close Board fencing) was the perfect solution for this exposed plot.
The original fence had failed due to inadequate foundations and high wind loading
The Process: Over-Engineering for the UK Weather
When installing a fence in a known wind-trap, the secret to longevity is entirely in the groundwork and the framework. Here is how we approached the build:
Heavy-Duty Uprights
We ditched the idea of bolting to the old wall and instead opted for thick, pressure-treated 4x4 timber posts, digging past the wall to secure them firmly in the earth.
Rock-Solid Foundations
To combat the high wind load of the plot, we used an incredibly robust footing. Every single post hole was filled with 40kg of Postcrete. While some might call this over-engineered, we believe it's exactly what a coastal Torquay garden requires.

Feather-Board Construction
We built the fence bay-by-bay using thick, overlapping feather-edge boards. This construction method is naturally stronger than pre-made panels and allows wind to pass over the structure more effectively.

Rebated Capping
To finish the job, we installed rebated timber capping along the top line. This isn't just for a neat, premium aesthetic—it crucially protects the exposed top grain of the feather-boards from absorbing rainwater, preventing rot and extending the life of the timber.
Why Feather-Board Fencing Outperforms Panels
Standard fence panels might be cheaper upfront, but they're fundamentally weaker when it comes to wind resistance. Here's why feather-board construction is superior for coastal locations:
- Individual board flexibility: Each feather-edge board can flex independently in the wind, rather than the entire panel acting as one rigid sail
- Superior strength: Bay-by-bay construction with arris rails creates a stronger framework than panel clips
- Better drainage: Overlapping boards allow water to run off naturally, preventing moisture retention
- Longer lifespan: Quality timber with proper capping can last 15-25 years versus 5-10 years for standard panels
Built for Torquay's Coastal Conditions
Living in Torquay means dealing with unique weather challenges. From the exposed gardens near Babbacombe Downs to properties closer to the seafront, your fencing needs to handle:
- High wind loading from coastal gales
- Salt air exposure that accelerates corrosion and rot
- Heavy rainfall that can saturate inferior timber
- Temperature fluctuations that cause expansion and contraction
This is why we don't cut corners on materials or installation methods. Every fence we build is engineered for local conditions.
